Sea Cadets Recruiting Drive Was your
summer anywhere near this exciting?
Summer is over and the members of the Manatee Division of the Naval Sea Cadet
Corps (Yankeetown) can say that they had an exciting and adventurous season. Let's see
what they have been up to.
The Sea Cadet Corps is a youth organization for Americans 13-17 years old who
are interested in the maritime services. Cadets in the program are allowed to wear Navy
uniforms and gain rank as they train and learn new skills. They earn ribbons for outstanding
performance in trainings, marksmanship, good grades and community service among oth-
ers.

This year we had cadets like Petty Officer Third Class Israel Diaz, Citrus County resident
and the unit's Assistant Leading Petty Officer, attend POLA at NAS Whiting Field in Pen-
sacola and Seaman Emily Lo Vece, of Marion County, attend across the country in Califor-
nia while part of a family vacation.
Seaman Trey Fowler, Citrus County resident, who was the Division's 2014 Cadet
of the Year, attended a High Speed Marksmanship training in Illinois. Cadets were well
prepared with flak jackets and helmets and had constant safety briefings while using live fire
on several shooting ranges.
One of the most popular advanced trainings to attend is the Petty Officer Leader-
ship Academy as this is a prerequisite for continuing to earn rank. Generally, cadets are
trained to lead squads, give commands and council shipmates under their charge. They also
learn how to lead physical training, how to teach a class and public speaking.
