lege football fans proudly
wear their team colors on
Saturdays from September
through January and spend
hard earned money on foot-
ball tickets. But some of
those same fans are growing tired, and
fearful of the direction of intercollegiate
athletics, football in particular.
Look no further than Gainesville
to see what college football has become.
The budget for the University of Florida
Athletic Association is more than 83 mil-
lion dollars a year. Football provides the li-
ons share of revenue for that budget which
includes expenses for 19 sports, most of
which do not show a profit. In spite of
the state of our economy, Florida officials
have either raised ticket prices or attempt-
ed to raise ticket or booster fees in 3 of the
last 4 years. The attempt this year was met
with such public outrage that the powers-
