Not Always a Good

Do you think there
would be much response if
you heard Yankeetown School was clos-
ing and your children would be bused up
county?
Well it is not true but still the
thought comes to mind that most people
don’t worry about a disaster till it hits home.
Two weeks ago Yankeetown School Princi-
pal Ann (Hayes) Jensen held a meeting for
parents on the status of the school’s Title
1 funding and what the school is facing.
Notes were sent home with students sev-
eral times in addition to stickers placed on
the fronts of all the younger students. One
teacher, one set of parents and 2 children’s
grandparent ( 5 people) are all that showed
up out of almost 200 students. I find this
totally unbelievable.
Yankeetown School is facing
tough budget cuts due to the fact that the
student enrollment at the end of last year
was 250 and today it is 197, a loss of 53 stu-
dents or 1/5 of the school students. These
