Ice cream shop brings back
memories
Dunnellon now has a
Baskin-Robbins that opened a
couple of weeks ago. It
couldn't compare to the ice
cream cones we used to get in
Inverness during the 1950’s
and 60’s at the Freezer Queen just across
from CitrusHigh School. Those cones were
made of soft ice cream and they were out of
this world.
Two ex-policewomen from Chi-
cago, Illinois opened the Freezer Queen (we
called it the Creamette), sometime in the
middle 50's. Hazel and Ethel were tough busi-
ness women who kept a squeaky clean eat-
ing establishment and had a no-nonsense ap-
proach to the many CHS students who pa-
tronized the eatery. There were no inside
accommodations. Customers would drive-up
and eat the food in their cars, take it with
them, or eat on the large wooden picnic table
Kayak fishing (left photo) is one of the things that drew Gail and Jim Zaloga to South Levy. Gail and Jim Zaloga relocated to the
that was adjacent to the building. It was on a
Inglis area 6 to 7 weeks ago from High Springs after they fell in love with the Nature Coast town. They had searched out the west coast
concrete floor and under an extended part of
towns in the Big Bend, each about 60 miles from their home and decided our area met their needs and likes. More on page 5.Car
