Summer is over and the members of the Manatee Division of the Naval Sea Cadet
Corps can say that they had an exciting and adventurous season. Let's see what they have
been up to.
The Sea Cadet Corps is a youth organization for Americans 13-17 years old who
are interested in the maritime services. Cadets in the program are allowed to wear Navy
uniforms and gain rank as they train and learn new skills. They earn ribbons for outstanding
performance in trainings, marksmanship, good grades and community service among oth-
ers.
Two of our shipmates that at-
tended recruit training graduated as honor
cadets. Seaman Apprentice Christopher
Kimball, Marion County resident, went
to Naval Air Station Pensacola and Sea-
man Apprentice Clay Pickard, of Alachua
County, went to Naval Station Mayport.

drills, inspections and course work.
The recruits got to stay in barracks on base
"at the end of the airfield so we heard the
planes fly over at all hours" said Kimball.
Touring the USS Independence was a
highlight of the event. His citation notes
his "performance, initiative and motiva-
tion are in all respects outstanding".
