Hands Across the Water – It’s really a historic first. Yankeetown and Inglis are cooperating
to share their water supply. In an unfortunate string of events while trying to do a relatively
routine procedure of cleaning the YT water tower, the valve (from the 1940s) at the base of
the water tower was broken. This meant the tower could no longer be put into a configura-
tion to supply the distribution system. A temporary jumper using a fire hose to connect the
water plant with the distribution system via a fire hydrant was rigged but without the tower,
there has been no good pressure control which is why the fire hydrants have been cracked
open. It is going to take some time to repair and would mean the whole town is out of water.
However, the Inglis and YT water distribution systems are within yards of each other on
HWY 40 across from the school. Using a fire hose to jumper between two fire hydrants, the
two systems have been tied together. Therefore, the Inglis water plant can supply the YT
system. The same trick can be used to support Inglis should there be a need. YT staff is now
awaiting parts to repair the system. At this time there has been no estimate given as to when
the actual repair is to be completed.
An interconnect to be used in emergencies, has been a dream for years and at one
time a permanent line was proposed for the two towns. The design work was done for free
by Florida Rural Water Association. Inglis and YT agreed to split the original estimate of
$20,000 for construction costs given by FRWA. But estimates from the engineering firm
which usually works with the two towns gave a considerably higher estimate, prompting
Inglis to get cold feet and withdraw from the deal.
Inglis and Yankeetown have a very long history of dancing with each other over shared
