Remembering the past
Continued from page 1
Youth baseball, which is already strong in Newberry, is upgraded, the merchants and busi-
nesses are happy, some jobs will undoubtedly be created, and it should have minimal impact
on the environment. It sounds like a win-win project to me.
When the clearing of the property finally began the bulldozers were quickly halted
because there were at least 8 gopher tortoises on the property. The project was stopped until
the gophers could be relocated.
We all remember Aesop’s fable The Hare and the Tortoise. The tortoise grew tired
of hearing the hare brag about how speedy he was and told the hare that he could be beaten.
The hare doubled over with laughter and challenged the tortoise to a race which the tortoise
accepted. We know what happened next: The hare saw how pitiful the tortoise started the
race and took a nap, ate breakfast and took another snooze before dashing to the finish line.
The tortoise plodded along and when the hare woke up from his second nap he saw the
tortoise far off in the distance approaching the end of the course. The hare frantically raced
to the finish line, but the tortoise crossed the line just ahead of the hare. The hare was dis-
graced. He slumped over in a heap and the tortoise said to him, “slowly does it every time.”
I’m not sure if there is a lesson here for the good folks of Newberry. I am glad the gophers
were removed and not destroyed. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently denied a peti-
tion to put the gopher tortoise on the Endangered Species list, but recognized it as a candi-
date species which could be added later.
I think the park may be an asset to the area, but protecting our ecosystems and na-
tive species of wildlife should be high on our list of priorities. As we all know the gopher
tortoise isn’t in a hurry to get anywhere and if you have doubts about that, just ask those
heavy equipment operators clearing the land south of Newberry.
