I heard tales of the “the night they stole the courthouse” many times growing up

community-beneficial events.
Inverness Little League was two teams in those days, the Red Sox and Blue Sox. The
west side had a Crystal River team and a team from Homosassa. Every two weeks or so
my team, the Red Sox, would play Crystal River: We would rotate venues. I remember
Ernie Woods from Crystal River because he was the inventor of bona fide “trash talking”.
Everybody liked Ernie and he was a pretty good ball player but, he could talk smack like
nobody we had ever seen.
On one occasion we traveled to Homosassa. We had all heard stories of what a
wild place Homosassa was. Early in the game one of the Homosassa boys hit a hard ground
ball that bounced underneath my glove and hit me in the unmentionables. I was really
hurting. Coach Eddie McIntire helped me to the bench and a Homosassa player turned on
a spigot and brought me a cup of water. In those days the water in Homosassa had high
sulfur content. I had never tasted water before that tasted like rotten eggs so the water com-
pounded my misery.
When I got home that evening my Mother asked me how the game went. “We
won Mom, but those west side boys tried to kill me twice, but I made it out alive”, I said.
