Tutoring Program to benefit

The Nature Coast Volunteer Center, in
developed a program designed to recruit and train volunteer tutors to work with elementary
students. The ASPIRE Program, an acronym for Achieving Student Progress in Reading
Education is focused on strengthening literacy skills of students.
The State of Florida and the entire nation are striving to improve teaching and
learning for all students. Citrus County Schools have been highly successful in providing
learning opportunities and options for students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade;
however, there are many students who continue to struggle with literacy, particularly with
reading comprehension. These students are in need of highly individualized assistance.
The Nature Coast Volunteer Center and Retired & Senior Volunteer Program are currently
seeking volunteers interested in registering for upcoming ASPIRE Program training oppor-
tunities. Registered volunteers will receive the required volunteer training and orientation
provided by the Citrus County School District, as well as additional specialized training
facilitated by a literacy expert who will teach tutors the skills necessary to assist children
with reading fluency and comprehension skills.
Volunteer opportunities are available at all eleven district elementary schools,
working with first, second, and third grade students. ASPIRE volunteers will be asked to
serve a few hours a day for one to two days per week.
The training will be held at the Citrus County School Board office located at 1007
West Main Street, Inverness, FL, 34450. Training dates are scheduled as follows: Volunteer
Tutor and Mentor Training, September 9 at 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; ASPIRE Program Tutor
Training, September 16 at 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about training, contact the
Nature CoastVolunteer Center at (352)-527-5950 or e-mail at ncvc@bocc.citrus.fl.us.
