Tampa Port Director talks port
economics to local Chamber members
“West Central Florida is one of the fastest growing regions in the State for port eco-
nomic development.” That’s the message Tampa Port Director and CEO of the Tampa Port
Authority Richard Wainio wanted to stress as he spoke to members of the Chamber of Com-
merce at today’s Chamber Luncheon at Citrus Hills Golf and Country Club in Hernando.
Approximately 75 people attended the luncheon to hear Mr. Wainio speak about
the competitive advantage Florida ports have with other parts of the U.S. He also touched
on Port Citrus and the upcoming feasibility study. “The developer you chose, Martin As-
sociates, is first rate. They are going to take the blinders off and really tell you what you can
do in terms of economic development and job creativity.”
Wainio also stressed the importance of how people really make the difference
when it comes to successful ports. “Here’s what drives trade in Florida ports…People. If
you don’t have people, you don’t have trade.”
After the presentation Josh Wooten, President of the Chamber of Commerce,
