Wildlife Rehab One On One
By Newscaster Correspondent Sally Price
Richard Lynch’s parents were Nancy and Ollie Lynch and he is a descendant of the
Knotts family who founded Yankeetown. Richard, who has spent most of his life in Yan-
keetown has a great interest in nature and became a volunteer at Eye of the Eagle Wildlife
Sanctuary located in Newberry Florida which is a 501C3 non-profit corporation and is oper-
ated in conjunction with Sunset Meadows Country Animal Clinic run by Dr Dawn Miller
DVM. All types of wildlife from at least seven local counties are treated in the veterinary

clinic free of charge and then housed and rehabilitated in the sanctuary. The main goal of the
sanctuary, which has state and federal permits, is to release the treated wildlife back into safe
native habitats. Release rate for Birds of Prey is 50%.

Richard’s interest is in Raptors (eagles, hawks, owls). When this young Osprey was
brought in with no apparent injuries but uncoordinated in flight and could not eat, Richard

took on the job to try and rehabilitate it. Three times a day Richard came to Inglis where

to learn to perch on a limb.
Richard said he has learned a lot from doing this volunteer work but the one thing
he feels is important is for people to watch throwing food, even apple cores, out car win-

dows. This food attracts all animals but especially mice which is a favorite food of raptors
and many of these beautiful birds are killed when they try to catch their prey on the roadside.
Richard is concerned that many companies are going back to the plastic 6 rings for bottled
drinks and this cost many animals their lives.
When the time comes, Richard feels the Osprey might be released here locally
but could possibly return to it’s native area of Cedar Key. You can contact the sanctuary in
Newberry at (352) 332-3063.
