When we hit long stretches of uneventful highway, Kathie plugged in her Kindle
and read while I played a variety of music and chewed on hard candy and ice. Kathie calls
me Captain Crunchy on these trips.
Hazleton is a town of about 25 homes nestled in the mountains of northern W.VA.
It has no stores or a post office and only one church. It is about one mile from the Maryland
line, (hence the name Maryland Line Road), and about two miles from the Pennsylvania
line to the northwest. The nearest towns are Friendsville, Maryland and Bruceton Mills W.
VA. Both are 5 miles from Hazleton.
Nobody that I know of has air conditioning in Hazleton and even though we just
arrived after a “heat wave” it was very comfortable. The mornings were downright cool
reaching into the high 50’s at least twice while we were there. Sleeping in our bedroom on
the second floor we can hear the creek cascading over rocks right outside. I always sleep
soundly there.
Sitting on Kathie’s Mom’s back porch a neighbor brought over cucumbers and
corn one evening in exchange for eggs. His chickens weren’t laying and Doris (Kat’s
Mom) didn’t plant corn. On another evening another neighbor brought Doris green beans
in exchange for eggs and squash. The barter system is alive and well in W. VA.
My Kathie isn’t much of a farm girl and her relatives have always teased her for
being “citified”. At a family gathering recently Kathie’s aunts talked of what zodiac sign
they harvested tomatoes under. One of her matronly aunts teased Kathie and asked her
which sign she harvested tomatoes under. My wife, who is very quick, told her aunt she
harvested her tomatoes under the sign that said .99 cents a pound. They couldn’t get the

Inglis man arrested on warrant for battery and burglary

An Inglis man was arrested by the Dep. Jason Gallup of the Levy County Sheriff’s
& Package Store
Office, just before 8:00 p.m., July 22, on a Levy County warrant for two counts of battery
and one count of burglary. Matthew John Porterfield, 22, 187 E. Cason Blvd., Inglis, was
transported to the Levy County Jail. His bond was set at $15,000, $5,000 on each of the
three charges.
