Citrus Springs Middle School was the staging area last week as depicted in this photo for
a Citrus County disaster drill and training for a mass fatality. This drill tested the response
capabilities of the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, Citrus County School District, Citrus
County Fire Rescue, Nature Coast Emergency Medical Services, Citrus Memorial Health
System, Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center and the Citrus County Health Department.
The scenario involved a Citrus County school bus en route to Lecanto High School
with 40 students aboard. At 7:25 a.m., the bus driver suffers a heart attack, and the school
bus crashes into a tree at an intersection in Citrus Springs. There are 11 dead, 20 injured, 9
walking wounded and one missing.
The scene was very visual. The school district donated one of its out-of-service
buses, which was overturned. Firefighters were seen cutting into the bus to extract students.
EMS workers conducted triage, treating injuries and transporting students.
