Pyrotechnics and July 4th,
Made for Each Other
Like most families, mine has
a crazy uncle to which all family
craziness is measured. Whether
it was inborn or the years spent
in "The Nam", our uncle is live-
lier than most and has spent most of my life-
time forging a reputation for outlandishness
which lives in infamy.
For some reason, which only the
cards would know, a large percentage of the
males of the family were dealt the "fascina-
tion with things that go boom" hand. I was
indoctrinated as a young child with plastic
cherry bombs (later outlawed) and other ex-
plosives that helped my uncles celebrate the
4th of July all the year round. The fact that I
was exposed to pyrotechnic mayhem while
still impressionable left a lasting mark and I've
continued to enjoy chemical percussion ev-
ery since.

daring rescue when the bear bolted into Gulf waters after being hit with a tranquilizer dart. Read full story on page 8.Photo by Becky Bickerstaff
