wife, Deborah A. Dickson, 62, of Floral City. According to the Florida Highway Patrol,
both Dicksons were ejected from the vehicle and neither was wearing a seatbelt.
According to reports from both investigating agencies, the FHP and the Citrus
County Sheriff’s Office, Mr. Dickson was traveling east on Istachatta Rd. and swerved to
avoid an animal that traveled onto the roadway. His vehicle, a yellow, 2004 Chevrolet SSR
pickup truck, traveled onto the south shoulder of the road and overturned.
The CCSO investigator reported that Mr. Dickson sat on the bumper of the ambu-
lance as Mrs. Dickson was being prepared for transport to Tampa General Hospital for her
injuries. The deputy walked the 100 feet length of the skid marks with Mr. Dickson, who
was unsteady on his feet, but not limping. The deputy noted in his report that Dickson began
limping, a short time later.
In the arrest report, the CCSO deputy also noted that Mr. Dickson smelled of al-
cohol and had bloodshot, watery eyes. The deputy told Dickson that the crash investigation
was over, and he was now beginning a criminal investigation for driving under the influ-
ence. Dickson submitted to roadside sobriety testing and performed poorly. He also gave
permission for his blood alcohol level to be tested.
Dickson’s arrest report also stated that a paramedic with Nature Coast Emergency
Medical Services told the deputy that bystanders told him that Dickson had attempted to
leave the scene prior to their arrival. The paramedic said Dickson had refused medical treat-
ment, stating he’d rather be arrested than go to the hospital. The paramedic also told the
deputy that Dickson had told him that he was driving at the time of the crash, and that he
was worried about his wife who was ejected from the vehicle.
Dickson was placed under arrest. He was transported to the Citrus County Deten-
tion Facility, charged with DUI with serious injury. His bond was set at $500. He was also
issued a traffic citation for DUI with a mandatory court appearance. At the jail, Dickson
