Plan ahead began June 1, and county officials are reminding residents that

when a hurricane threatens, it’s important not only to plan ahead and heed early warnings
for themselves and their property but for their pets, too.
“It may be difficult, if not impossible, to find shelter for your animals, and so plan
ahead,” said Citrus Animal Services Shelter Operations Manager Pattie Amon. “Do not wait
until disaster strikes to do your research. If you must evacuate, the most important thing
you can do to protect your pets is to evacuate them, too.”
Amon said leaving pets behind is likely to result in them being injured, lost, or
worse. Disaster shelters in the county do not accept pets, with the exception of the Pet
Friendly Shelter located at Lecanto Primary School. Dogs (80 pounds or less), cats and
birds are accepted there but there are conditions. Residents, for example, must stay at that
shelter.
Caging is available for dogs and cats; however avian pet owners must provide
caging for their birds. All animals must be up-to-date with their county license and rabies
vaccination. Also recommended are DHPP for dogs and FVRCP for cats. Residents must
bring that information with them.
In addition to the requirement of staying at the Lecanto Primary shelter for their
pets to be housed there, residents will be solely responsible for their pet while it is at the
shelter. Walking, feeding, and general care are the responsibility of the owner. The pet will
not be sleeping in the same room the owners, but it will only be a hallway away.
