Our Woman in Havana":

July 12 at Museum Cafe

Just beyond our reach, there lies a tropical gem, an island of enchantment ,

and shrouded in mystery until recently. Many of us have longed to know more about this

fascinating place and meet the impassioned people who live in our neighboring country of

Cuba.

In 2011 Annie Betancourt, created "Sisters Across the Straits". Ms. Betancourt was

born in Cuba and came to the US as a refugee . She is a former Florida and US House

Representative and is a past president of the League of Women Voters.She created this pro-

gram as a means to help end decades of isolation by building trust and improving relations

with Cuba.

The League of Women Voters sponsors three or four educational trips to Cuba each

year. LWV members share with the Cuban women the tools to develop and sustain leader-

ship in their communities, recognizing the importance in the future development of their

country.The League believes that the advancement and empowerment of women is funda-

mental to achieving peace and prosperity.
