party did our first presi-
dent, George Washington,
belong to? The answer is
none. Washington didn't
belong to a political party. He expressed
a fear that political parties would create
conflict and result in government stagna-
tion. Hmmm, does that sound familiar?
Ironically enough, three mem-
bers of his circle of influence, Thomas
Jefferson, James Madison and Alexander
Hamilton, all of whom also expressed
disdain for political parties, founded the
first political parties in the United States.
Hamilton founded the Federalist Party
and our second president, John Adams,
won the election under that party's banner.
Jefferson and Monroe started the Dem-
