Man receives head injury from fall at Barge Canal

The Citrus County Sheriff s Office was contacted around 4:30 p.m., Sunday, June

15, by a person who identified him/herself as the "buddy" of a man who had just fallen at

ground level, either on or near to, the barge canal and hit his head. The friend told the dis-

patcher that the 41 year-old man had received a head injury with "serious bleeding." The

man was reported to be breathing, alert and responding appropriately, but still on the ground

on the north side of the Cross-Florida Barge Canal at the access street. ShandsCair-2 was

contacted to transport the injured man to Bayonet Point Medical Center in Hudson, FL. The

CCSO s Division of Fire Rescue was dispatched to the area to assist with traffic, as Shand-

sCair needed to land on U.S. Hwy. 19 on the south side of the Barge Canal. Within about an

hour the man was enroute by ShandsCair-2 to the hospital.

The year was 1897 and train travel and transportation was at an all time high. This was the

train crew on the South Florida and Western Railroad (SFWR). The photo was taken at Juliette

which is now the modern day Rainbow Springs. The SFWR was part of the Plant System started

Plant achieved it by buying up all the small railroad companies. Around 1902 the rail line was
