The night the Russian bear came
to Inverness
I can’t be sure of
the exact year but I believe it
was 1960. The Citrus High
School Quarterback Club
brought a wrestling program
to the school gymnasium one
night to raise money for the football pro-
gram. The event was well advertised and
the CHS gym was packed with students
and local citizens anxious to see profes-
sional wrestling in our little city.
The matches were quite entertain-
ing, but the climax of the evening was the
challenge presented by the shows promoter
at the conclusion of the program. The pro-
moter offered anyone in the audience who
could last one full minute in the ring with a
Russian bear the handsome sum of $50.00.
That was a lot of money in those days.
When
the
promoter/emcee
brought the bear into the ring the audience
