Traffic crash in Pine Ridge kills Hernando man
Pet Patrol
A traffic crash in Pine Ridge on June 9, took the life of a Hernando man, when he
lost control of his car and crashed into a bus.
The crash took place at 8:55 p.m. on County Rd. 491 (N. Lecanto Hwy.), south of
N. Deltona Blvd. Jeffrey B. Stele, 61, Hernando, was driving south on C.R. 491 (N. Lecanto
Hwy.) in a 2010 Ford Focus. In the same area, Barney Titus, 55, of Sebring, Florida, was
driving a 2010 Provost Bus, traveling north on C.R. 491. Mr. Stele lost control of his car
and crossed over the painted median into the northbound lane of C.R. 491, into the path of
the bus. Mr. Titus attempted to avoid crashing into Mr. Stele’s car by braking and steering
to the east shoulder of the road, but his attempts were not successful, and the front left of
the car struck the front left of the bus.
Stele’s car rotated counter-clockwise and came to rest facing north in the south-
bound lane of C.R. 491, while Titus’ bus came to rest facing northeast on the east shoulder
of C.R. 491. Mr. Stele received fatal injuries in the crash and expired at the scene. Mr. Titus
received no injuries. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts and alcohol was not a factor in the
crash. Neither driver carried a passenger. Estimated damages were $15,000 to the car and
$15,000 to the bus. The crash remains under investigation and details are subject to change.
