county to refine the agreement.
Yankeetown To Reapply for Grant – In a Special Meeting, the YT council voted to
reapply for a grant to replace a small portion of its water distribution system. The grant
had been previously applied for but YT did not have enough points on the merit of the
project alone at the time, so the grant was not awarded. However the grant agency awards
extra points for having minorities among the employees. Yankeetown is now claiming a
minority on their staff. Because the percentage of minority make up is based on full time
positions only, and Yankeetown only has 4 full time positions, the one in four gives YT a
25% minority make up of their employees. This is an impressive percentage and appears
to put YT ahead of many other communities in points. The move has been controversial
because Yankeetown has no proof of the American Indian ancestry asserted, however the
grant writer has stated that no proof is required. The grant is for $600,000 from the Depart-
ment of Economic Opportunity which used to be the Department of Community Affairs. A
motion to resubmit the grant claiming minority status carried with three voting for and one
dissenting vote.
No Temporary Zoning Official – The YT Council decided not to go with using one of
their current employees to fill in as Zoning Official until a permanent one can be found. YT
has received 5 applications, at this writing, for the position.
Meanness In The Swamp – Someone uprooted a small Maple tree in the Children’s
Park at the YT town hall. It appears that it could not be saved. The tree was donated
by Yankeetown resident Lynne Lefiles last year at YT’s Arbor Day celebration, and was
planted by town children at the event. Another small Maple tree was received Thanx to
the Crystal River Arbor Day Celebration which was sponsored by the Citrus County Tree
Board. Good Night and Good Luck.
