Teen Pregnancy in
Citrus County
More than half of all births in
Citrus County are to single women, many
still teenagers.
Because of their youth and lack
of employment, 70% of all Citrus births
have to be paid for by Medicaid.
In addition, STD/HIV rates are
rising, especially among teens. They are
not receiving crucial sexual health infor-
mation because of time constraints, con-
fusion over policy and ideological bias.
We learned this by meeting with
county and state officials, school admin-
istrators and staff, as well as many com-
munity groups and individuals. Although
socio-economic issues are involved, it is
also obvious that teens need more sex-
ual health information. Citrus County
teaches "Abstinence Plus" to 9th grad-
ers. The materials and lecturers are from
a faith based group. There are some very
useful aspects to the program but serious
omissions include: glossing over and
discouraging the use of contraception and
