Yankeetown School's
Safe Boating Program
Special to The Newscaster by Mark Moore
As of the 17th and 18th of March there are now fifty additional Safe Boaters on
area waters and all of them can show you their "About Boating Safely" certificate and
wallet card proving it.
The program was sponsored by Yankeetown's Middle School and delivered by
Flotilla Commander Leslie Moore and Instructor members of Yankeetown's U. S. Coast
Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 15-2. The two day program covered many aspects of safe boating
including; navigating the waters, legal aspects of boating, using personal flotation devices
(PFD), knots, preparing for the trip, trailer usage and other topics.
In addition to hands on training including proper fit of their PFD and learning
about vessel safety checks the students had to pass a difficult 60 question test. This course
also qualifies them for a State of Florida Boating card required of any person operating
a boat in Florida and born after January 1988. In the photo Flotilla Commander Leslie
Moore and Yankeetown School principal Jeannine Mills present certificates to the two top
scorers Wyatt Wallace of Dunnellon and Patrick Stewart of Inglis.
The Levy County fair was in full swing despite the rain on Saturday near Williston as critters
were put on display in various judging contests. Leila Velazquez, 14, of The 4-H club Majes-
tic Oaks assured her Toggenburg Dairy Goat named Tinkerbell that she still loved her even
though she came in 2nd in her class of Dairy Goats. Photo by Mark Moore.
Homicide - Continued from page 1
"Lock your doors, leave outside lights on at night, set alarms, and if you see something,
say something."
Sheriff McCallum is equally concerned, ìAny suspicious activity observed by the
citizens we protect, if reported immediately, could help solve these cases," he said. "If you
see something that just doesnít seem right, call 911.î
