Remembering the Past
A 16 year-old Crystal River High School student was arrested by the Citrus County
Sheriff s Office, April 12, charged with one count of a felony, accessing a computer/com-
puter system/computer network willfully, knowingly and without authorization. According
to the arrest report, the boy had inserted a USB thumb drive into a computer workstation
at the school on Nov. 28, 2012 which contained a password cracking program. The report
stated that, again, on Dec. 4, 2012, a password-cracking program was detected on one of
the computers at the school. The school conducted an investigation and determined that the
boy had again inserted a USB thumb drive into a computer, which alerted the technology
resource center that the malicious program was present. At that time, the boy was denied
computer privileges at the school.
The report further stated that on Jan. 22, 2013, the boy used another student s logon
and password to access the school s computer network through a computer workstation and
identified a file located on the shared network drive that contained personal information of
hundreds of students, to include home addresses and social security numbers. This was de-
termined after the boy approached two students and told them their social security numbers
to show them that he knew their personal information. The boy later admitted to school
administrators that he d used another person s logon to access the school s computer net-
work without permission. The deputy who investigated the incident noted that he found no
