A Word on Being Abused
Being the oldest of the old-
est of six means I have a lot of
aunts and uncles who range in
age from slightly younger than
my parents right down to almost
my own age. It's one of those situations
where they and I are only a few years apart in
age. That's how I grew up. Being the kid of
the oldest sibling of six also means you're
born with a special target stenciled across
your forehead that says something akin to,
"remember all the times your older brother
beat the stuffing out of you; now's your
chance to get even by proxy." I survived a lot
of that too.
When I think back on all of their at-
tention, I know I wasn't merely a target, I was
also a toy; I can only imagine how novel it
might have been for them to suddenly have
their very own animated string-free Howdy
Doody doll to marvel at and play with. Hav-
ing an even-keeled personality, I was a will-
