Samantha L. Lawson, 23, Inverness, was arrested by the Citrus County Sheriff's
Office, March 31, charged with child abuse without causing great bodily harm. Her bond
was set at none. Lawson is accused of spanking a small child on the bare bottom with
enough force that a "large amount" of purplish/red bruising was visable to the child's but-
tocks, two days later, the report stated. The bruising was noted by a daycare worker on
March 8. The worker contacted the Department of Children and Families (DCF), and a
Child Protection Team examination and interview was scheduled for March 10. The bruis-
ing was noted and photographed. Lawson admitted to becoming frustrated with the child on
March 8 due to the child refusing to dress him/herself. She said she spanked the child, twice
on the bare bottom, then a third time, harder, after the child was dressed. Lawson agreed that
the bruising was excessive, according to the report.
Melanie Hope Ashwood, 38, Hernando, was arrested by the Citrus County Sher-
iff's Office, April 7, charged with felony aggravated battery on a person 65 years of age or
older, a second-degree felony reclassified to a first-degree felony. Her bond was set at none.
Hugo J. Fiore, Jr., 45, 1027 S. Arabian Ave., Floral City, was arrested by the Citrus
County Sheriff's Office, April 8, charged with introduction of contraband into a Detention
Facility; his bond was set at $2,000. According to the arrest report, Fiore was taken into
custody at the Citrus County Court House in Inverness, ordered by the court on a writ. Fiore
denied having contraband on his person when arrested, but he was found to be in posses-

stance (one hydromorphone 10 mg tablet). The arrest came as the result of a traffic stop on
Hwy. 41 South for the driver traveling in excess of the posted speed limit (57 mph in a 45
mph zone). When the deputy smelled a strong odor of marijuana, the three occupants were
asked to step outside while the vehicle was searched. The report stated that "throughout
the vehicle, there were small pieces of marijuana sprinkled on the seat, as if earlier they
had been rolling marijuana cigarettes." A white pill was found under one of the passengers'
(Ricard's) seat. Ricard stated he'd been in a traffic crash the previous night and was in pain.
He said he could not afford to go to a doctor, so he'd bought two pills from a neighbor for
$5 each, and had taken one of the pills, earlier in the day.
Joshua Michael Kerwin, 19, 2503 Wilson St., Inverness, was arrested by the Citrus
County Sheriff's Office, April 9, charged with felony retail theft ($300 or more, but less than
$5,000); his bond was set at $2,000. He's accused of taking items with a combined value of
$542.56 from the Inverness Walmart, and passing all check out points without paying for the
items. The items included a microwave, an air mattress, two air pellet pistols, two pistol soft
cases, air gun pellets, shorts, shirts, socks, underwear, toiletries, flashlights, a Coleman ax,
