Thinking about food
Have you taken a look in
the cereal aisle at your gro-
cery store lately? I mean, re-
ally looked. There are more
kinds of cereal than Carter
has liver pills. I can remember a time
when choosing a cereal was deciding if
you wanted Kellogg’s corn flakes or Post
Toasties. Oh sure there was raisin bran and
a few, and I do mean a few, kids cereals,
but nothing like the plethora of cold cere-
als that clutter the grocer’s shelves today.
Our eating habits are a reflection of who
we are and just looking at the inventory on
our supermarket shelves tells me we have
become preoccupied with food. My father
used to say that some people eat to live,
others live to eat. I never truly understood
what he meant by that until now. With all
the variety of foods that are available to
the consumer today you would think that
anyone could walk into a store and find
something that would satisfy their hunger,
but that’s not always the case.
I recall being hungry as a youngster
growing up in the 1950’s. Mama usually
bought groceries on Saturday, which was
payday for Daddy. By Tuesday the cup-
