Daytime Lecanto suspect flees with
shotgun, later arrested
Around 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 12, deputies with the Citrus County Sheriff's
Office responded to a burglary at a Lecanto residence located at 1549 W. Crooked Branch
Rd.
The victim, who was inside of his home at the time, told deputies
that the suspect, later identified as 47 year-old James L. Jones of Crystal
River, parked his older model green Chevrolet Stepside truck on the road in
front of his residence and walked up to the front door. The victim stated that
Jones rang the doorbell and knocked on the front door. When he received no
answer, the victim stated, Jones walked to the back yard and opened a small

shed that containing several motorcycles and armed himself with a shotgun.
The homeowner said he went to his back yard through the back door and twice
discharged his shotgun, pointing it away from Jones, in an attempt to persuade him to stop
and surrender. Instead, Jones came at the homeowner and fought with him over the shotgun.
Jones gained control of the shotgun, hit the homeowner with it, then walked to his pickup
truck and fled the scene. The victim sustained minor injuries and was treated on the scene
