Earth Day – April 22nd is officially designated as Earth Day, a day to focus on en-
vironmental issues. It was started in 1970, at the height of protests over many causes but the
environment was not one of them yet, (it was also the year of the last Beatle’s album). Air
pollution was unchecked and seemed to be accepted as the price of progress. The founder
of Earth Day in the United States was the US Senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson who
was supposedly moved by the damages caused from an oil spill in Santa Barbara California
in 1969. It was hoped to harness the same passion exhibited for issues of the day and direct
them toward the problems of the environment also. It has seemed to make a difference in
that the public awareness created by Earth Day is credited with leading to the formation of
the Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. In 2009
the United Nations passed a resolution making Earth Day a world wide event and it’s now
celebrated in 192 countries. It is a day set aside to contemplate the planet and our steward-
ship of it. There are many local activities planned, find one in your neck of the woods.
Water – Speaking of environmental issues, the weekly SWFWMD report on rainfall and
aquifer levels is a bit gloomy. Our aquifer level for April is down 1.51 feet from the same
time last year. The rainfall has not been that great so far this year either, the January to
March amount was 3.16 inches but the historical average amount is 9.64 inches. SWF-
WMD sends a weekly update to the hall so if you are interested you can get the monitoring
information. Try to use non-wasteful water uses and be efficient to help sustain our supply.
April is Water Conservation Month.
