was actually one of the pieces included years ago in the original grant effort for the WGP.
Looking back, it was an impressively ambitious proposal that also included large parcels
adjacent to the WGP owned by the late Ollie Lynch of the original Knotts family, parcels at the
end of the road in close proximity to Chambers Island and the old Saxon property. All the
properties were connected in some way by water and the thought was that it would be a
"water trail/path". The original grant writers had envisioned that you could paddle from place
to place. I myself had dreams of turning the Saxon property into a recreational site with tennis
courts and a bona fide swimming area using the boat basin, I think I was alone in this vision.
At any rate, it was not to be, but we did manage to purchase the WGP. The Felburn Founda-
tion ended up buying the Lynch property essentially next to the WGP so that property was
put into conservation. We all know the history on the Saxon property and Chambers was sold
to private individuals. We are now revisiting a part of the original proposal. There was much
discussion of the pros and cons. The pros are obvious, the island is rich with historical value,
and natural resources that could be preserved and thoroughly enjoyed. The cons are that the
town would be taking on more responsibility and tasks that it may not have the resources to
meet, like maintaining the property and amenities with our staff. It was decided to start the
application and search for a partner that could help with maintenance. The decision may be
altered depending on the outcome of that search.

we had the ZO office in the hall. Chris' correct number is 447-5435. Sorry for any inconvenience this
