The Citrus County Commission on March 22 voted to hire two water conservation
specialists and one secretary in the Water Resources Department to help reduce water use in
Sugarmill Woods.
The Southwest Florida Water Management District has fined the county about
$240,000 for going over its permitted per capita useage at the Sugarmill Woods water plant.
Most of that overage is due to lawn watering, and the idea is that at least part of the fine can
be offset by the county showing good faith in getting the numbers down by having a plan

and hiring personnel to monitor usage.
While the county is negotiating that issue, Water Resource director Robert Knight
       
noted, the personnel will be needed going forward because if the numbers don’t go down,
               
the county would be fined again. The district s goal is that by 2018 utilities attain a 150 gal-
lon a day per person average for their systems, and there are other community systems over
           
that now, he said.
He did praise Sugarmill Woods for its efforts in reducing usage but said there are
 

some people who won’t voluntarily comply. The next move, he said would be even more
stringent water conservation rates so that the highest users pay more and more. About 100


fines, which are $100 for first time offenders, have been levied in the past year for customers


of that system, Knight said.


