Letter to the Editor: Re: Land of the free?
Lawful elections are the epitome of democracy; without them, there’s no freedom
left. Nothing is more important to any democratic republic than lawful elections. It’s so
important that in times of war, US troops have even been called on in foreign countries to
safeguard local elections.
Given this, who would have ever thought that the basic freedom of a fair election
could be threatened here in the U.S.? Well, it’s happened TWICE right here in Inglis!
1. In 2010, your right to vote was denied by the Inglis Commission when they
scheduled, against the provisions of Inglis’ own charter, the date of that year’s election so
there was not enough time to advertise lawfully petitioned referendums. A group of your
fellow citizens had exercised their constitutional right to petition the government: they fol-
lowed the law; they championed your constitutional right to have a say; they collected
enough petitions to force a referendum on various town matters; and those petitions were
certified by Levy County. However, all this was for naught when the Commission thumbed
their noses at town statutes, and willingly killed a legal ballot initiative -- one that’s guaran-
teed by both the U.S. and Florida Constitutions. Your government literally killed your right
to vote!

2. Again in 2012, some people in Inglis tried to subvert your right to vote. At the
