Fisherman’s Park May Get Improvements - Yankeetown is reapplying for a grant
from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to install a dock at their little park
at the corner of 63rd and Riverside called Fisherman’s Park. The grant was denied last year
to everyone’s surprise since YT had already received a grant to do the design work which
was completed. The grant writer is hopeful that this year YT will make the cut. The project
would encompass a stairway down to the water where a dock would be installed. The river
has cut a bit of a cliff at this particular spot making the water inaccessible as it is. This could
be used as a launching spot for kayaks or a tie-up spot for motor craft that wish to get out
here for a spell. There has been some confusion because the grant does mention “launch-
ing” but there will be no launch facility for motor boats. Kayaks, canoes, tubers will be
able to launch here. The project falls under what’s called the Florida Boating Improvement
Program.
Fee Change for Yacht Basin – The YT Council voted to prorate the fee for using
the boat ramp at the YT basin, affectionately known as “the government slip”. The fees had
been set at $40 a year. However they are now prorated on a quarterly basis so if you buy a
pass with the year half gone you won’t have to pay full price. The passes all expire at the
end of the year. Remember that there is no charge for YT residents.
Dog Tags – People in Yankeetown love their pets. Almost everyone here seems to
have one but for some reason we are forgetting that the town issues dog tags. It’s for our own
benefit because should your pet get picked up by the dog catcher for some reason, the catch-
er would be able to identify the owner and contact them before hauling it off to Bronson.
Or if the animal should get lost, the owner could be found. It’s a very minimal charge and
the tags are very cute. Get them at the hall. I’ll never forget when I first went into the hall
