4th Candidate Jumps Into
Remembering the past
Breaking News October 1960:
Levy Sheriff's Race
A Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy has jumped into the 2012 Levy County Sher-
iff s election. A watch commander for Marion County Lee Sullivan, a graduate of Chiefland
High School is running as a non-partisan (NP). Sullivan spent five years in the U.S. Navy
after high school and returned to civilian life in 1981.
Sullivan will be running against three other candidates entered as Republicans:
Noel Desmond, former candidate for the Levy Co. Commission, Bobby McCallum, former
Levy Deputy and Evan Sullivan, a major with the Levy County Sheriff’s department. Cur-
rent sheriff Johnnie Smith (D) has indicated he will not seek re-election.
Rep. Rich Nugent to Hold Constituent
Meeting in Dunnellon
Rep. Rich Nugent announced today that his office will be holding a constituent out-
reach meeting in Citrus County. Representatives from Congressman Rich Nugent’s District
Staff will conduct a Constituent Outreach Meetingat the Dunnellon Public Library,20351
Robinson Road, Dunnellon. The meeting will be held Monday, March 12th from 1:00 pm to
2:00 pm. A statement from Nugent's office said the meeting will be an opportunity to learn
about the services provided by the Congressman s office as well as an opportunity to share
views on issues facing the country.
In a story that made a 1960 Time magazine, Yankeetown and Crackertown held a straw vote
to see if Nixon or Kennedy would win the election for U.S. President. Local citizens held
the mock election complete with “stumping” with speeches from a platform. After the vote,
citizens from both towns met at the town divide line for reading of the results. Yankeetown
Mayor Eugene Knotts and Inglis Mayor Felix Hawthorne announced the final vote of Richard
Nixon defeating John Kennedy 151 to 39 with 4 people undecided. This was probably the
greatest event to take place locally until Elvis Presley strolled into Yankeetown to film Follow
That Dream in 1961 and then Mayor Carolyn Risher wrote a Town Proclamation (On town let-
terhead) banning Satan from the Town of Inglis November 5, 2001. Complied by Sally Price.
