VOTE “YES” ON THE MARCH 19
REFERENDUM FOR “HIGHER TAXES”
A Guest Commentary by Jim Sherwood
For all of you that missed last week’s town council election, nothing changed, the
challengers were handily defeated and we still have the same old government in place. The
same government that quadrupled the town’s operating budget since it took office in 2006;
doubled your water bill and denies that it will double again; hired 2 new zoning officials and 2
new attorneys to stop all growth; denies the existence of elevated levels of arsenic in the
ground water located less than 500 feet from the town’s water supply; imposed a moratorium
in 2006 that has killed all economically viable business and redevelopment in town to date and
in the foreseeable future; preaches open government while routinely violating Sunshine Laws
with impunity; opened a 400 acre park for your passive enjoyment that will demand hundreds
of thousands of dollars to maintain over the next 10 years while your water pipe system rots
under your feet; built a new $5.5 MM water plant, but you still can’t drink the water (they
don’t); simply refuses to work with Progress Energy, Levy County or even Inglis on mutually
beneficial community interests; provokes litigation rather than negotiation; illegally denied
you your right to vote on the Amended Comp Plan under the town’s newly adopted Home-
town Democracy form of government and is fixing to do it again!
The Amended Comp Plan was illegally adopted by the town council without a refer-
endum vote and forwarded to DCA for approval but was rejected by DCA because you were
denied the opportunity to vote on it. Now the town government is being forced to hold a
