Retired Public Information Officer Gail Ann Tierney, with the Cit-
rus County Sheriff s Office for many years, passed away last weekend. Gail
was found deceased during a wellbeing check at her Inverness home by
deputies on Saturday, March 14, 2015.
Gail was born in Jamaica, NY on Aug 18, 1950 to the late Charles
W. and Margaret (Woodland) Tierney and moved to Florida in 1984 from
Queens, NY.
She was employed by the University of Florida in Gainesville,
working as editor of their Alumni magazine, and later, in Alumni donations. In 1987, she
moved to Inverness to become the Public Information Officer for the Citrus County Board
of Commissioners.
In 1990, she became the Public Information Officer for the Citrus County Sheriff s
Department, a position she held for 22 years. Gail was instrumental in starting the Seniors
vs. Crime program, a joint project of the Citrus County Sheriff s Office and the Florida At-
torney General s Office designed to assist people in the community who have been scammed
or taken advantage of. Gail was well-known among state agencies for her public relations
work and highly respected by other PIOs across the state. She was considered a mentor by
