The wildlife has been safe around Harvey Markham since
December of 2005, until this past January 21st, that is.

Gulf Hammock was familiar stomping grounds for Markham in
his youth. Being the youngest of 8 children he was a tag-a-long

stubborn, he refused to leave the hunting camp to have it checked. Since that time he says
he sometimes “gets a catch in his come-along”.
On January 21 of this year the day didn’t start out particularly well for for Markham. The
trip to the woods of Gulf Hammock started out with a flat tire. Then, after driving a short
distance the truck began to wobble and Markham and daughter Barbara Brazil stopped just
in time to find that the lug nuts hadn’t been tightened. Another hunter stopped and helped
get the situation under control.

The second deer ran off with the dog running in front of it after Markham fired his
shot. Markham got a chuckle out of that and told his daughter, “all I saw was two brown
streaks ripping through the woods with the dog in front. Never seen that before”.
As Barbara said later, “ I couldn’t believe anyone, much less Pop, could walk
through a noisy dry creek bed 40 or 50 yards to find two deer fighting a dog and then kill
an 8-point buck, all at the age of 82”.
