Citrus Landfill Fire
Causes $500k Damages
From Citrus County Sheriff Dept.
Citrus Fire/Rescue was dis-
patched to a fire in or about the Central
Landfill, located at 230 W. Gulf to Lake
Hwy. in Lecanto, at 12:21 a.m., March 10.
The original report was for a brush fire, but
as units were responding, further informa-
tion indicated that the fire was in a garbage
cell.
Six minutes after notification, the
first fire units (S. Kensington Ave.) began
to arrive and quickly established a water
supply with a fire hydrant near the entrance
of the Central Landfill. The fire was mov-
ing rapidly up the plastic cell liner. Fire
crews were successful in preventing the
fire from escaping the garbage cell.
Once the fire was contained to
the cell, firefighters elicited the help of the
landfill staff to operate their heavy equip-
ment and cover the burning garbage with
sand/soil while fire crews protected the op-
erators and their equipment.
