Citrus County animal
tethering ordinance
A question posed to Citrus
County Sheriff Jeff Dawsy on his week-
ly Wed. morning (7:30 am) radio show,
"Ask the Sheriff" on The Fox 96.7, was
in regard to tethering an animal. Accord-
ing to the Citrus County tethering ordi-
nance 14-49(g), if you're tethering an
animal, the leash must be at least 20 feet
in length, and the area where the animal
is tethered must be free of trash, waste
material, junk or other discarded mate-
rial or vegetation that can entangle the
tether. The tether must be sufficient in
strength, but should not be heavier than
1/8 of the animal's weight. A collar or
harness should be used - NOT a choke or
a pronged training collar. An animal must
have adequate water and shelter, as well.
In summer months, a shed, carport or ga-
rage is acceptable shelter, but in winter
months, a proper shelter is mandatory,
with blankets or hay strongly recom-
mended. A temperature is not specified
for bringing an animal indoors, but law
enforcement may use discretion if they
