A traffic crash in the Chassahowitzka area of Homosassa Springs, at 2:48 pm,

Feb. 5, resulted in a bicyclist suffering incapacitating injuries and being airlifted to Bayo-

net Point Medical Center (by ShandsCare2) near Hudson, FL for treatment.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on U.S. Hwy. 19,

about 500 feet north of the intersection with W. Southland Ln. Michael V. Perricone, 62,

of Spring Hill, was driving a 2010 Hyundai Accent 4-door passenger car, traveling north

on U.S. Hwy. 19 in the outside lane (at 55 mph in a 60 mph speed zone) while David W.

Briggs, 65, Homosassa Springs, FL was peddling a Roadmaster bicycle, against the flow

of traffic; traveling south along the east shoulder of the northbound lanes of U.S. Hwy. 19.

The report stated that Mr. Perricone, the driver of the car, experienced a medical episode

which caused the car to travel onto the 4-ft. paved shoulder, striking the front tire of Mr.

Briggs' bicycle and causing impact with the car at the right front and windshield. Mr.

Briggs came to rest on the east grass shoulder of U.S. Hwy. 19, south of the collision area.

Mr. Perricone, the driver of the car, received no injuries during the crash. He was

wearing a seatbelt. He was cited for failure to provide proof of insurance. Mr. Briggs, the

bicyclist, was cited for slow bike failing to ride right curb (wrong-way riding or walking).

The scene was cleared at 4:02 pm.


