A new Florida law that will come into into
child safety in a motor vehicle by tightening restrictions on the use of child car seats,
booster seats and seat belts. Every motor vehicle operator will be required to use a crash-
tested, federally approved child restraint device for all children, ages five and younger.
The new law will require children to be in a child seat through the age of three.
After three, and until the child is five, parents can choose to have their child in either a car
seat or a booster seat, but the child must be in one or the other. There are a few exceptions
(not a good idea) to this law - such as a child being transported by someone who is not a
member of the immediate family.
A rear-facing seat should be used to restrain a child in a vehicle, from birth until
about the age of 2, or when a child reaches the upper height or weight limit of the seat (typi-
cally around 35 pounds). A forward-facing seat with a harness should next be used, until

the child reaches the manufacturer's upper height or weight limit for the seat (typically 40
to 65 pounds). In a vehicle, a child should be protected with a seat belt-positioning booster
seat until he/she is at least 4 feet 9 inches tall (typically 8 to 12 years old).
