We’re Not Taking this Lying Down – In response to the recent increase in thefts
on the river, the Yankeetown Inglis Woman’s Club held a town meeting to discuss measures
that could be taken by the homeowner to reduce the possibility of being robbed. They had a
fairly good turnout of about 40 people. The Levy County Sheriff’s Department sent Officer
Shawn Hunt to answer questions and make suggestions. He recommended installing mo-
tion sensor activated lighting on your dock as well as some type of surveillance camera. He
suggested checking into “game cameras” which are less expensive options for surveillance
but do an adequate job of capturing evidence that may be helpful in catching the perpetra-
tor. Inglis Police Department also sent a representative, CPL Brian Hilberer to address the
crowd and answer questions. Both officers recommended reporting any suspicious activity
saying “eyes and ears are the best help” so report something that just doesn’t look right. At
this point one of the attendees broke up the crowd by implying jokingly that it might be
difficult to tell in Yankeetown. The officers also recommended reporting things that aren’t
suspicious but contribute to a safe environment, such as a street light being out.
There was a discussion of forming a Crime Watch. Yankeetown/Inglis had a Crime
Watch several years ago. Some of our firemen/women actually quit the department to be-
come more active in the crime watch. A car was donated. Money was donated for gas, a
considerable cost for such an endeavor as the main activity is riding around the town. I can’t
imagine how much it would be at today’s prices. Per Rob Kubistek, who attended the meet-
