Citrus Chairman unveils his plan
Pet Patrol
for the upcoming year
At Tuesday’s regular Board meeting of the Board of County Commissioners,
Chairman Joe Meek unveiled his Chairman s plan for the next year. Meek identified six key
areas that he wants the Board to focus on:
1.
Budget
2.
Work with the City of Crystal River and Inverness to develop partnerships
to improve our County and City. Strengthen the relationship between the organizations.
3.
Develop a comprehensive and detailed long range plan
4.
Focus on a specific environmental project within Kings Bay
5.
Identify areas of concentration and interest for each Commissioner to fo-
cus and work on
6.
Continue to focus and enhance economic development initiatives for Cit-
rus County.
Commissioner Meek stated his plan illustrates the need to come up with new ways
to spark growth and revenue for the County and not rely on one source of income.
County Administrator Brad Thorpe revised some of the numbers he presented in
Phase 1 of his action plan earlier at the county’s emergency meeting on Friday. He advised
the Board the Tax Collector had received an additional $630,285.74 from Progress Energy/

chairman told the meeting “unfortunately our largest taxpayer (Progress Energy) has de-
cided to act in a matter that will cause great harm to this county." County administrator Brad
Thorpe said, “it is not just this year. Their intention is to lower their tax liability in Citrus
County.”
Legal experts from Gray Robinson, P.A. were on hand so board members could
have an opportunity to ask questions about the litigation going forward. Tom Cloud, Esq.
from Gray Robinson, P.A. spoke about the complexity of this tax case. “We haven’t seen a
challenge of this magnitude ever. You are brought together by something you didn’t cause.
The local community has to defend itself.” Property Appraiser Geoff Greene stated Duke
Energy is challenging the methodology his team used to create his assessment, specifically
pollution-control equipment.
Commissioner Dennis Damato told a television reporter, “We must go ahead and
hold that ground and stand our position.” A county spokesman said the three entities will
move forward in an effort to make sure Duke Energy pays its fair share of property taxes.
