Remembering the past

make no sense to bamboozle or endanger your best customer. But China has different stan-
dards for their products and our current administration in Washington has been unwilling
to supply enough inspectors to ensure that the products coming into our country are safe.
It should be a given that Chinese goods should meet our standards to be sold at our retail
outlets.
The nonfood products coming from abroad, particularly China is forcing many
American companies out of business. Retailers have had to stock goods made in China to
stay competitive with Wal Mart, who, by the way, is the largest importer of Chinese goods
in the world.
As a leader in the free world we cannot isolate ourselves. But we have taken a step
backwards in the import/export field and one of the major reasons for that reality is that we
are allowing unsafe and inferior products from other countries into our ports and into our
markets.
I think it is time for all of us to rekindle that old slogan we used to be proud to say: Buy
American. I would only change the concept to mean buy American as often as you can. Give
the American product first preference when you can.
If we support our own products in the market place and provide customs enough
inspectors to ensure that the products we accept in our ports are safe, our own food and hard-
ware producers will at least be on a slightly more even playing field with China and other
countries of the world. Editor’s Note: The other factor that has contributed to the loss of
American jobs to China is the unequal tariff policy of our government. The rate on Chinese
goods coming in is 2%. The rate on American goods going into China is 20%. This Squawk
Box was originally published in June, 2007.
