The Crystal River Green Tavern was originally opened in 1936 by Lewis and John Williams. The
tavern, located where the Hwy 19 Race Trac gas station is today, was well known all over the
state of Florida. The restaurant was closed during World War II. In June 1946 Williams' nephew
Gil Stoney, with his mother Virginia Mason, reopened the eatery when he returned from the
Marines. Virginia helped the restaurant succeed, known for it's seafood, including ground
turtle burgers along with turtle steaks. Gil's wife Lottie, brother Bill Stoney and his wife Lou-
ise, with sister Charlotte Woodard worked there many years. In 1979 the kitchen burned and
only the bar survived until it closed in June 1996.This popular business closed 50 PROOF
