Honoring Our Vets
With Doug Johnston
Veterans
Day
evolved from an armistice
between Germany and the
Allied Powers that took af-
fect on November 11, 1918.
The Treaty of Versailles was
signed on June 28, 1919 and
was called, at that time, “the
end of the war to end all wars”. It was the
official end to WWl.
After WWll, a movement led by
an Alabama vet named Raymond Weeks
who wanted Armistice Day to honor vet-
erans from all American wars, eventually
culminated in Dwight Eisenhower sign-
ing a bill into law in 1954 creating Armi-
stice Day. A few days later the name was
changed to Veterans Day.
