was excited at the prospect of seeing them but, as he was crossing the bridge he kept look-
ing back to see his young wife holding my sister in her arms waving good-bye to him. He
loved my Mother very much and knew that in a very short time he would be leaving her and
their new daughter as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. He would be sent far
from home to fight an enemy on foreign soil. The war would change him forever, but he
would return and be a loving husband and father to his beloved wife Irene and the four
children they would bring into this world.
Georgia had an all-American halfback named Frankie Sinkwich in those days and he
ran wild on the Gators that day. Georgia won 75-0. Every time we whip those Georgia
Bulldogs I look at the Acosta Bridge as I am exiting Alltel Stadium and picture my Father
walking across that bridge to meet my Grandfather. I have a picture of him waving at my
Mother and sister etched in my mind and can feel the turmoil that he was surely feeling
knowing that he would soon answer the call to duty to fight a terrible war and leave his
young bride and daughter behind..
When we win this game, I send a silent message to those Gators like my Father and
Grandfather. I tell them that this one was for them and all the rest of the long-suffering
Gator Nation who didn’t have much to cheer about that cold November afternoon in 1942.
This year will be no different. I will be at Alltel Stadium and when it is over I will celebrate
our victory or mourn a loss. Either way I will look at that bridge and feel the strong pres-
ence of my Father and Grandfather with me.
