Remembering the past

where a man murdered his young bride by decapitating her then plunged to his death from
the very balcony that we could see from the front of the house. The story was that the woman
roamed the house at night looking for her head. I asked my Mother about the well known
story and she said the Richburgs were the only people she knew that lived there and she saw
Mrs Richburg at the post office the day before and her head was still attached. I thought
Mom just didnʼt want us to know the frightful truth.
As we arrived the biggest, brightest full moon I had ever seen was rising in the
eastern sky. It was a scary backdrop to the old, two-story house. Joe Mcleod suggested that
we come back after we trick or treated. We all agreed except Gieger, he called us sissies
and dared us to go with him. We followed Buster to the back of the house where we found
an open window. Once inside, we stood in the old living area and just huddled for a few
minutes. Then from the top floor we heard the most blood-curdling scream I have ever heard
before or since and a white form came flying past us and tore out the front door with us right
behind him. We ran as fast as we could go the mile and a half or so to Mcleods house at the
end of Zephyr Street. We sat on the curb in front of the Mcleod house completely out of
breath. After awhile Buster Gieger asked Spivey what scared him. He would only say he saw
a ghost.
A day or so later we pieced together what really happened. While we were down
stairs Spivey sneaked upstairs. He figured we would eventually make our way upstairs and
he would jump out and scare us. He was wearing a sheet with eyes and nose cut out to be
made up like a ghost. Once upstairs he decided to hide in a closet. When he slowly opened
