Former
Commissioner Challenges
Preparing To Launch
Inglis Budget Process
The Inglis town commission adopted it's budget for fiscal 2013-14 at its final bud-
get hearing last Thursday, Sept. 26th, but not before a former commissioner and mayor
registered their complaints on how public notification was handled. Mayor Glenda Kirkland
said the final millage rate was set at 4.5 mils, which was below the roll back rate of 5.0381.
The final budget expenditures for 2013/2014 are $1,842,489.00 and reserves are being used
to meet expenditures. The mayor commended the commissioners on their work. Commis-
sioner Sally Price said there would be no raises for the mayor, commission, or cost of living
raises for town employees. The final budget summary is available on thenewscaster.com
(pdf).
Former commissioner Drinda Merritt said the commission's vote violates a town
ordinance that requires a sixty day public notification period before adoption. Merritt said,
"the same ordinance requires that if one voter at the meeting wants an additional budget
meeting the Commission shall do that, ten residents’ submitted letters requesting another
meeting. They decided that the Town Ordinances do not apply to them. Also they did
not allow public input at the last public workshop. These are the same individuals who
screamed that they were not allowed to speak at the Commission meetings and one Com-

CRBB’s goal is to educate the public about Florida’s vanishing maritime heritage and
it’s industrial past while providing those with a love of the old wooden boats an opportunity
to come together to learn and appreciate the art. The boat’s construction done by members
was made by many primitive tools and means used in the days the boats were originally made
and used. The masterpiece will be a floating education center after the launch and final touch
ups. The boat is dedicated in memory to Jack Bosen who passed January 2013. Bosen was an
original member of the CRBB, instrumental in it’s organizing and had the greatest boat build-
ing experience, teaching it in an outstanding career.
Pictured are members who met this past weekend to talk over the launch and chris-
tening plans. Weather permitting this Scow will be launched Friday October 4 at 3:30 pm at
Crystal River Preserve State Park at 3266 N Sailboat Ave. From Hwy 19 north of Crystal River
go west on State Park Dr to the dead end. The public is invited. Photo & story by Sally Price.
